London is hosting an international energy summit this week, bringing together more than 120 global leaders – including ministers, CEOs, and heads of international institutions – to redefine energy security for a rapidly changing world.
Hosted by the IEA and UK government, the Summit on the Future of Energy Security brings together leaders from over 60 governments and 50 companies to tackle energy system challenges.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are among the speakers, joining UK Secretary of State Ed Miliband and IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, who are co-chairing the two-day event.
What will be covered at the summit?
Topics under discussion include:
- Boosting electricity system resilience amid surging demand
- Tackling risks from digitalisation and climate-related events
- Strengthening clean energy supply chains, especially for critical minerals
- Enhancing gas and oil security and emergency response capabilities
- Promoting cross-border cooperation and investment in clean energy
A series of ‘side events took place on 23 April, delving into issues like methane emissions, gender inclusion, and energy support for Ukraine. Select sessions from the summit are being livestreamed on the IEA’s official platforms.
Secretary Miliband described the summit as “the first major global gathering to treat clean energy as a core pillar of energy security,” adding: “There can be no national security without energy security. The UK is proud to lead this global conversation.”
You can watch the summit live from the IEA’s website.
