Sources of waste heat in commercial and industrial applications include manufacturing equipment and engines, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Instead of being “wasted” by release into the ambient environment, the heat could be used to provide hot water for another process, or heating for an office building.
An example of harnessing waste heat on a large scale is occurring in Islington, North London, where waste heat from the London Underground is set to provide heating and hot water to more than 1,350 homes, a school, and two leisure centres.
