The Welsh Government has launched Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru, a publicly-owned renewable energy developer aimed at accelerating renewable energy projects, especially onshore wind, across Wales. Economy Secretary Jeremy Miles announced the launch in Bryncynon this week.
How will Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru operate?
Based in Merthyr Tydfil, the Trydan Gwyrdd team will collaborate with Natural Resources Wales to develop wind farms on the woodland estate. The company plans to engage with local communities near initial project sites at the earliest stage of opportunity.

The launch is part of the Welsh Government’s long-term strategy for a greener energy supply and decarbonisation. This initiative aligns with the new Labour government’s goals, aiming to achieve net-zero by 2050 and foster sustainable development across the U.
Jeremy Miles, Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Energy and the Welsh Language said:
“There is no question that clean energy is central to a more prosperous Wales and a better future for our communities. I hope today’s announcements show how we will make the energy transition benefit Wales, both now and in the future.
“Owning our own renewables company on behalf of Wales will allow us not only to develop renewables in ways that fit with the natural environment but most importantly to provide us, and the people of Wales, with the ability to own the returns on what will be a significant investment.”
New Heat Strategy for Wales
In addition to the Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru launch, the Welsh Government published a cross-Government Heat Strategy during the event in Bryncynon. This strategy outlines a roadmap for decarbonising heating across homes, commercial properties, and industry, contributing to Wales’ net zero commitments.
Heating accounts for 50% of energy use in Wales, with 75% generated from fossil fuels. The Heat Strategy explores innovative solutions, such as using warm water from old mine workings, to heat homes in former mining communities. This initiative falls into the wider commitment to achieve low-carbon energy systems in Wales.

Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru will begin outreach to local communities to discuss early plans for priority projects.
