Environmental Reporting Guidelines: BEIS updates published today

New guidelines have been published today (31.01.19) by Government Department BEIS which cover environmental reporting. Specifically, the new guidance includes sections on streamlined energy and carbon reporting.

The Environmental Reporting Guidelines document is designed to help companies and limited liability partnerships in complying with the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) regulations. It can also help all organisations with voluntary reporting on a range of environmental matters, including greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting and the use of key performance indicators (KPIs).
This guidance includes changes which take effect from 1 April 2019. These changes require all UK quoted companies to report on their global energy use in addition to greenhouse gas emissions in their annual Directors’ Report. There are also requirements for large unquoted companies and limited liability partnerships to disclose their annual energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and related information.

BEIS highlights two new/updated sections of the guidance:

Chapter 1: Steps in reporting your environmental impacts covers the steps to take when considering your environmental impacts and which KPIs to report.

Chapter 2: Guidance on Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) helps businesses across the UK in scope of the 2018 Regulations comply with their legal obligations that come into force on 1 April 2019. It also outlines additional voluntary information that is likely to be useful to qualifying organisations and a wide range of stakeholders.
